Possible reasons why LeBron picked Miami over the others.

Could state income tax be a possible reason why LeBron James signed with the Miami Heat over other teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and Chicago Bulls?

Why would LeBron James sign with a team in a state where he would have to pay millions in state income taxes, when he could play for the Miami Heat in Florida where there is no state income tax because it’s banned in Florida’s state constitution, unlike the states of Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. According govspot.com seven states have no income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only divided and interest income.

In a July 1 blog post by the New York Post breaks down the amount of money LeBron would pay in taxes in New York as opposed to Florida.

“If LeBron James goes to the Miami Heat instead of the Knicks, blame our dysfunctional lawmakers in Albany, who have saddled top-earning New Yorkers with the highest state and city income taxes in the nation, soon to be 12.85 percent on top of the IRS bite. There is no state income tax in Florida.”

“On a five-year contract worth $96 million — what he’d get from the Knicks or the Heat — LeBron would pay $12.34 million in New York taxes. Quite a penalty for the privilege of working in Midtown.”

In an article done by Businessandmedia.org, Kyle Gillis breaks down the tax situation in the states of Ohio and New Jersey.

“New Jersey and Ohio, the other reported frontrunners to attract James, also have state income taxes, but they are not as high as in New York. Based on a $96 million contract, James would pay $5.69 million in state taxes if he re-signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. If he signed with the New Jersey Nets, James would pay $10.32 million in state taxes.”

Chicago

“Last week, the Pew Center on the States named Illinois one of the 10 most financially troubled states in the nation” a quote by Christopher Nichols in a November 2009 article from Metroplannig.org . According to Nichols the stat doesn’t pays it’s bills ,” Essentially the state has run a deficit every year since 2001, dodging the constitutionally required balanced budget by delaying payments from one fiscal year to the next to Medicaid vendors, such as doctors, pharmacists and small business owners that provide social services”. There is also no plan to fix this problem, passing reforms that would raise taxes and not lower them”, and this practice also affect the state as a whole, ” The state’s poor fiscal practices also have caused its credit rating to drop, meaning higher interest payments on loans and bonds.  When the state has gigantic revenue problems, it doesn’t send required payments to universities, Southern Illinois hasn’t received a state payment since July”. It would clearly be a bad move for James to move to a state with such debt.

All the writing in quotations are words from Christopher Nichols.

As For Cleveland

I don’t blame LeBron for not signing with the Cavaliers, according to Peter A. Brown of the Wall Street Journal, “Ohio’s piece of the American pie has been shrinking since the end of World War II” this is a bold but true statement by Brown. The lack of population growth, job loss, loss of residents, between 1950 and 2000 along with its state tax burden its clear that Ohio is going through  a lot of problems clearly not appealing to a NBA star of LeBron James’ stature.

“For most of the 20th century, Ohio, along with neighboring Michigan, was the symbol, of the American manufacturing base. The state prospered as a blue-collar economy. Gov. Ted Strickland took office at the beginning of 2007 promising to resurrect the state’s economy, but Ohio has lost 376,000 jobs since then.” – Wall Street Journal

It’s clear that LeBron will net more money in Florida with Ohio having a top income tax rate of about 6%, and Cleveland having a 2% levy.

Looks like LeBron got a good deal, 2 superstar team mates, and no state income tax.

Dennis Hopper Dead at 74

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Dennis Hopper, the high-flying Hollywood actor-director whose memorable career included the 1969 smash “Easy Rider,” has died. He was 74.

Family friend Alex Hitz says Hopper died Saturday at his Venice home, surrounded by family and friends. The actor had been battling prostate cancer. MORE…….

Patse Magazine

“Hopper became best known over the years for his exuberant, manic performances in movies like Apocalypse NowSpeed and especially Blue Velvet, David Lynch’s sublime nightmare vision of a suburban underground. A New York Times profile in 1994 called him “professionally weird,” his cinematic persona defined by “a particularly imaginative menace.”

But his most revered and influential work was as the co-writer, director and star of Easy Rider, the iconic new-Hollywood treatment of counterculture. The film, a haunted relic, follows a pair of drug dealers who travel from Los Angeles deep into the South, where, it becomes increasingly clear, they aren’t fated to leave.” Read more….

Check out the rest of the images  @ NYTimes

With there being so much hype surrounding her latest music video ‘Born Free‘, Directed by Romaine Gavras, Maya Arulpragasam, also known as M.I.A., recently did a two-day photo shoot around Manhattan and Brooklyn New York with photographer Ryan McGinley, for New York Times magazine. Ryan McGinely did a wonderful job in capturing M.I.A. at her finest; carefree, young, loose and passionate. The image of her on the swing is amazing.

These photos go along with the article M.I.A.’s Agitprop Pop written by Lynn Hirschberg a long time contributer for The New York Times Magazine. M.I.A. recently spoke of her disagreement with Hirschbergs’s article saying what she wrote wasn’t the truth, seen here on her Twitter account, the article features Hirschberg and M.I.A. speaking about her links to Sri Lanka, her visa problems in the US and her family. This was also covered by NME Magazine. The recording artist had this to say:

“917.834.3158 CALL ME IF YOU WANNA TALK TO ME ABOUT THE N Y T TRUTH ISSUE, ill b taking calls all day bitches ;)” – M.I.A.

“NEWS IS AN OPINION! UNEDITED VERSION OF THE INTERVIEW WILL BE ON neetrecordings THIS MEMORIAL WEEKEND!!! >>>>” – M.I.A.

So like she said the unedited version of the interview will be on neetrecordings.com M.I.A. personal website this Memorial Weekend, so be on the look out, because it will be covered here. Seems like M.I.A. has been in the news a lot lately for her mouth, but I like her for that, I can respect a person, let alone a major music artist who isn’t afraid to speak their mind.

“Lady Controversial”

Weird, crazy, stupid, outrageous, cool, creative, whatever you want to call Lady Gaga’s latest music video “Telephone” featuring Beyonce  there’s no denying it’s very unique on a whole different level. In the last couple of days this video has been buzz of many blogs and caused a lot of heads to turn. As soon as I saw the video I knew that a people would have a problem with it because it’s very controversial. I personally don’t care for Lady Gaga at all or what she sings about, the point is she did go a little far in this video, and I’m not surprised she did. This video is filled with heavy sexual undertones, lesbianism, and violence just to name a few.  These things have been implemented into all of her previous videos as well; this time she just figured how to put a whole arsenal of controversial things into one video.

The video caused such uproar on the web rumors began surface that MTV had banned the video and deemed it inappropriate for its viewers to watch because of its raunchy content reported by DailyContributor.com and CNN. I came across a post on MissJia.com reporting that MTV executives are denying the rumors.

According to Miss Jia:  It was reported by CNN.com that bosses at MTV had decided to ban the video because of concerns over its sexual content, as they did with the promo for Madonna’s 1990 hit “Justify My Love.”

However, MTV’s manager of programming, Tuma Basa, has hit back at the reports. In a post on his Twitter.com page, he writes, “The reports are false… the video’s been airing since Friday morning on AMTV.”

Whatever the case is this video has caused a big ruckus, a much deserved ruckus especially with the contents of the video. One has to admit that the video is very bold in what it portrays; it’s just the way that people are receiving it. Some people like it and think it’s a work of art, others think it’s downright disgusting and insane.

People are also shocked a Beyonce’s involvement . . .

People are also shocked a Beyonce’s involvement as well. Beyonce’s says Honey B character from my understanding is supposed to be Lady Gaga’s girlfriend or accompanist throughout the video all the while driving the “Pussy Wagon”. I guess viewers and fans alike where shocked at Beyonce’s lesbian role in the video and from reading several comments on blogs just as many people didn’t care at all. Beyonce’s has been under scrutiny ever since she started her solo career, because she has become more sexual with each album. Her being sexual and wearing the clothes she wears in her music videos seem to contradict with her being of the Christian faith and being brought up in the church. Seeing that many of the things she sings about and the way she dances seem to contradict with the Christian faith and its practices.

But hey, everyone has their own opinion what do you the readers think?

New Album

“According to Pitchfork, M.I.A. is currently wrapping up her third studio album and it may be released sometime in the summer. She is working with producer/songwriter/DJ and ex-boyfriend, Dilplo, again but she told Rolling Stone that she has been happily collaborating with DJ Blaqstarr as well.” – From BeatCrave

New Song

M.I.A. released a new twitvid yesterday tittled “Theres Space For Ol Dat I See” , and could possibly be a new track from her upcoming album this summer. Check it out here

The New York Times

-I is aid that M.I.A. found a New York Times article that listed “The 31 Places To Go In 2010” online and went ballistic when she saw they had listed her home country, Sri Lanka, as one of the locations.

M.I.A. was offended and responded like this:

“F%#K NEW YORK TIMES! DO YOU THINK YOU NEED TO GO HERE ON VACATION?” and included a link to a very grotesque and very graphic photo of deaths which included young children. Her last tweet (there were five) shouted, “ONCE AGAIN F*&K NEW YORK TIMES !!!!!!!!! GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT.” CAUTION(Check out the graphic photo here)
